If your child’s birthday falls in the summer holidays, celebrate their half birthday at school instead. A July birthday becomes a January half birthday and an August birthday becomes a February one, both during term time. Many schools are happy to mark the day if you ask the teacher early and follow the class rules.
Why summer birthdays miss out
In many countries the school year runs from late summer to early summer, so the long holiday falls in July and August (or December and January in the Southern Hemisphere). A child born in the holidays is away from school on their birthday, while classmates get a song, a sticker or a treat on theirs. A half birthday gives them the same moment, six months later.
When is the half birthday?
| Summer birthday | Half birthday at school | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Late June | Late December | Can fall in the winter break; celebrate the last school day before it |
| July | January | Usually back at school after the winter break |
| 1 to 28 August | 1 to 28 February | Same day of the month |
| 29 to 31 August | 28 February (29 in a leap year) | February is shorter |
| Early September (before term starts) | Early March | Same day of the month |

How to ask the teacher
Send a short message two or three weeks before the date. Teachers plan ahead, and some schools have rules about celebrations.
“Hi [teacher’s name], [child’s name] has a summer birthday, so we celebrate their half birthday on [date] instead. Would it be possible to mark it in class that day? We are happy to follow the school’s rules on treats or to send something food-free.”
Then follow whatever the teacher suggests. Some classes do a quick song, some prefer a sticker or certificate, and some schools do not mark birthdays in class at all.
Food-free ideas for class
Many schools limit food in class because of allergies, so food-free ideas are often the easiest to say yes to:
- Donate a book to the class library with a “½” bookplate inside, and let your child choose it.
- Read a favourite story to the class, or a parent reads one.
- Stickers, pencils or bookmarks for each classmate.
- A “half birthday” crown or badge your child can wear for the day.
- Choose the class game or a song at the end of the day.
- Bring a class activity: a colouring sheet or a simple craft to share.
If treats are allowed
Check the school’s food and allergy policy first, and ask whether shop-bought, labelled treats are required.
- Half-iced cupcakes or cupcakes cut in half.
- Half-dipped cookies or biscuits.
- Fruit cut in half, such as orange halves or grape skewers.

Make it special at home too
- Half-and-half breakfast: two half pancakes or half a favourite cereal and half a new one.
- Open one small gift at 12:30 after school. See half birthday gift ideas.
- Half the birthday song at dinner, then let them choose dessert.
- A photo with a “½” sign to start a yearly half birthday tradition.

What about the real birthday?
Keep celebrating the real birthday at home or with friends in the holidays. The half birthday is an extra moment for school, not a replacement. Some families also use the summer birthday for a holiday trip or a party with friends who are around.
Other children who use half birthdays
The same idea works for children born:
- Around Christmas and New Year, whose birthdays are lost in the holiday season.
- During other school breaks, such as spring break or a mid-term holiday.
- On 29 February, who can celebrate on their half birthday of 29 August every year.
