What is a half birthday?
A half birthday is the day you are exactly half a year older than on your last birthday. It falls six months after your birthday, on the same day of the month.
If you were born on 15 March, your half birthday is 15 September. If you were born on 10 May, it is 10 November. Everyone has one, every year, whatever their age.
People mark it for fun: children whose birthday falls in the summer holidays celebrate at school, parents mark a baby's six-month milestone, and adults use it as a reason for a mid-year treat. Read more in our guide to what half birthdays are and why people celebrate them.
How to calculate your half birthday
Add six months to your birth month and keep the same day. If that day does not exist in the new month, use the last day of that month.
Take your birthday
Write down the day and month you were born, for example 31 October.
Add six months
Count six months forward: October becomes April. The day stays 31.
Check the day exists
April has only 30 days, so the half birthday moves to the last day: 30 April.
Born on 29 February? Your half birthday is 29 August, which exists every year. In years without a 29 February, this calculator uses 28 February for your birthday itself.

Dates that move to the end of the month
Only these birthdays need the month-end rule. Every other date keeps the same day number.

|---|---|---|
| 29 August | 28 February 29 Feb in leap years | February usually has 28 days |
| 30 August | 28 February 29 Feb in leap years | February has no 30th |
| 31 August | 28 February 29 Feb in leap years | February has no 31st |

| 31 December | 30 June | June has 30 days |
| 29 February | 29 August | 29 August exists every year |
Calendar half birthday or exact midpoint?
Most people use the calendar method: same day, six months later. The exact midpoint of a year is 182 or 183 days after your birthday, which can land a day or two earlier or later.
Half a year is 182.5 days (183 in a leap year), so the two methods rarely match exactly. This calculator uses the calendar method because it gives a date that is easy to remember every year. For the maths behind month lengths, see how many months is a year and a half.
| Birthday | Calendar method | Exact midpoint (+182 days) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January | 1 July | 2 July |
| 15 March | 15 September | 13 September |
| 10 May | 10 November | 8 November |
| 31 August | 28 February | 1 March |

Half birthday twins
Half birthday twins are two people whose birthdays are exactly six months apart, so each person's birthday is the other's half birthday.
Someone born on 4 April and someone born on 4 October are half birthday twins. The idea is popular on social media, where friends and couples find their "opposite" date. Some astrology fans link it to opposite zodiac signs. Read about half birthday twins and their meaning.
Halfway to one: a baby's half birthday
A baby's first half birthday is the six-month milestone, often called "halfway to one". Many parents mark it with a photo, a small half cake or a note of what the baby can do now. See our halfway to one ideas.

Half birthday questions
When is my half birthday?
Your half birthday is six months after your birthday, on the same day of the month. Use the calculator at the top of this page to get the exact date, weekday and countdown.
How do you calculate a half birthday?
Add six months to your birth month and keep the same day. If the new month is shorter and that day does not exist, use the last day of the month. For example, 31 August becomes 28 February (29 in a leap year).
Are half birthdays a real thing?
Yes. A half birthday is not an official holiday, but it is a widely used informal celebration. Schools often mark it for children with summer birthdays, and parents celebrate a baby's six-month milestone.
Does everyone have a half birthday?
Yes. Every birth date has a half birthday every year. Even people born on 29 February have one: 29 August, which exists every year.
How old am I on my half birthday?
You are your current age plus a half. Someone who turned 30 on their last birthday is 30½ on their half birthday. The calculator shows this as 30.5.
How many days are in half a year?
Half of a 365-day year is 182.5 days, and half of a 366-day leap year is 183 days. Because months have different lengths, the calendar half birthday can be 181 to 184 days after the birthday.
What is a half birthday if I was born on 31 August?
It is 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year. February has no 31st, so the half birthday moves to the last day of the month.
What are half birthday twins?
Two people whose birthdays are exactly six months apart, such as 4 April and 4 October. Each person's birthday is the other person's half birthday.
Why do people celebrate half birthdays?
Mostly for fun. Children with birthdays in the school holidays get a day with their classmates, people with birthdays near major holidays get a quieter day of their own, and parents use it to mark a baby's first six months.
Do leap years change my half birthday?
Only for birthdays on 29, 30 or 31 August. Their half birthday is 28 February in normal years and 29 February in leap years. Every other half birthday stays on the same date.
